He topped French opera, then died filed under old-fashioned

Massenet knew exactly what Parisian audiences wanted and gave it to them for forty-five years, in more than forty stage works ranging from comedies to classical myth. That instinct made him the dominant figure in French opera, and it is also what critics held against him by 1912: too fluent, too safe. Decades of neglect followed, then a mid-century reassessment that put his scores back on stages and on record. The reputational verdict on him is still oddly split, and the way critics have tried to word that split is worth reading.

Police heard the burglars live and still couldn't find them

A neighbour with an amateur radio set picked up the gang's walkie-talkie chatter while they were still inside the vault, was brushed off by police, and had to tape the conversations to be believed. Officers then searched 750 banks across an eight-mile radius as the robbery continued, and missed it. The gang was caught anyway, largely because one man had signed the shop lease under his own name. Decades of rumours about what was in those 268 deposit boxes still cling to the case, and some of the official files stay sealed until 2071.

The plan was lifted from Arthur Conan Doyle: "The Red-Headed League", in which thieves tunnel into a bank vault from a nearby shop cellar. One gang member mapped the vault's interior using an umbrella and his own arm span.

Jupiter's rings are made of its own moons, slowly crumbling

Saturn gets the rings, but Jupiter has them too " faint, dusty, and continuously resupplied by its inner moons as micrometeorites blast material off their surfaces. Each component can be traced back to a specific parent moon: the gossamer rings are literally named for Amalthea and Thebe, whose debris they contain. The estimated total mass spans five orders of magnitude, and nobody knows whether the system is ancient or recent. There is also a possible ring near the moon Himalia that may be wreckage from a collision in geologically recent times.

The rings are so faint they went unnoticed until Voyager 1 flew past in 1979, and seeing them from the ground still requires the largest telescopes available.
