Police heard the burglars live and still couldn't find them

A neighbour with an amateur radio set picked up the gang's walkie-talkie chatter while they were still inside the vault, was brushed off by police, and had to tape the conversations to be believed. Officers then searched 750 banks across an eight-mile radius as the robbery continued, and missed it. The gang was caught anyway, largely because one man had signed the shop lease under his own name. Decades of rumours about what was in those 268 deposit boxes still cling to the case, and some of the official files stay sealed until 2071.

The plan was lifted from Arthur Conan Doyle: "The Red-Headed League", in which thieves tunnel into a bank vault from a nearby shop cellar. One gang member mapped the vault's interior using an umbrella and his own arm span.
