Two men beaten for holding hands. A week later, 4,000 did it.

The gesture that got Brad Forkner and Christopher Rosevear attacked on a Portland bridge became the exact form of the response: strangers linking hands across the whole span. It came together in 72 hours off a single Facebook page, before that was a routine way to build a crowd of thousands. The couple themselves spoke at the rally, alongside the mayor. It also spread — Spokane staged its own version on the Monroe Street Bridge a week later.

The rally drew more than 4,000 people, organized in 72 hours through one Facebook page. Volunteers from Portland's Q Center also began patrolling downtown streets after the attack.
