He took a horror movie and built a snow globe from it

McQueen mined The Shining, a film about a family unravelling in a frozen hotel, and came out with chunky knits, shearling and pale neutrals — menace translated into warmth. The staging did the horror work instead: a Lucite box packed with artificial snow, a birch forest and thousands of candles, with models skating mid-show as an interlude. Seventy-three looks, a standing ovation that the fashion press treats as almost unheard of, and Anna Wintour in the audience at a McQueen show for the first time. Worth reading for how the isolation lands in the room rather than in the clothes, and for the corsets that were never meant to be worn anywhere.

Two showpieces were essentially not clothing: a bustier cut from rock crystal, and a corset made of coiled aluminium built by jeweller Shaun Leane. The aluminium corset was the only piece from the whole collection included in the 2011 Savage Beauty retrospective.
